The entrance hall of the JR West Headquarters was conceived
as a spatial embodiment of the Group’s “our aspiration”,
designed to evoke both anticipation for the future and a
sense of connection.
At the core of the design lies the concept of “MOVE: the
trajectory of evolution toward the future”. The space is
organized around multiple centers, each with its own
character, while remaining seamlessly interconnected to
create an open and fluid whole.
The overlapping trajectories of five circles are articulated
through floor finishes, ceiling patterns, and furniture
placement, giving form to a spatial continuum where
boundaries dissolve into one another. Generous glazing
admits abundant natural light and panoramic views, while
lofty ceilings foster an atmosphere of openness that
stimulates diverse activities.
In dialogue with the weighty presence of the existing
marble, warmth and approachability were introduced through
finely crafted wooden furnishings and carefully integrated
greenery. The marble flooring was replaced with
slip-resistant ceramic tiles, enhancing both safety and
durability. The introduction of a high counter and kiosk in
the lounge area establishes it as both a hospitality hub for
visitors and a flexible space that fosters spontaneous
engagement between staff and guests.
Bespoke benches are upholstered in moquette fabric
traditionally used in JR West trains, while pendant lights
above the counters incorporate details inspired by train
straps, subtly expressing the company’s railway origins. A
large digital display further positions the entrance as a
hub for communication, sharing information both internally
and externally. In this way, the space reflects JR West’s
role as a vital infrastructure company, projecting its
vision of future-oriented collaboration with a wide range of
stakeholders.
